Everyone has a story about how they came to their vocation.

Often, this story highlights a union of soul and need. Frederick Buechner described it as an intersection "where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." â€‹

On the "Gladness & Hunger" podcast, I interview guests to mine the magic of their vocational stories.

The premise is simple where I ask the 5 same basic questions.

(1) How did you land on your current vocational pursuit? In other words, what's your story? â€‹

(2) What makes your heart glad?

(3) When you look back over your shoulder at your life, can you see how God was preparing you?

Because I teach soft skills as a professor, I like to also ask...

(4) Which interpersonal skills do you deem most critical in those you hire and work with?

(5) What personal habits have proven critical in your life?

The podcast is geared to writers, students, story lovers, and anyone seeking inspiration for their own vocational journey. As a fiction writer and business professor at Lipscomb University with a heart to teach students how to build careers that feed their soul, my own deep gladness is in sharing messages of hope and inspiration like these.

S5: E7: Grace Knetter: “A Passion to Deliver Care”

Some know their vocational callings early in life. This is true for Grace Knetter, the only student I’ve ever had in business class with the dream to become a registered midwife. In 2025 when our first grandchild was born at home under the care of a midwife, knowing there are women like Grace called and gifted to step into this centuries-old practice became all the more personal.
